La Mariposa, or the Butterfly Chair, was originally designed in Buenos Aires in 1938 by Jorge Ferrari Hardoy, along with Antonio Bonet and Juan Kurchan. This classic chair is also known as the Hardoy chair or BKF chair after its creators. In the late 1990's Lars Kjerstadius created the most comfortable and well proportioned version of this chair design to date. This edition has been upholstered with wild Icelandic sheepskin for unrivalled comfort.

By making changes to the original open design Lars made a chair that was better suited to the size of 21st Century humans: The chair itself has been made 30% larger, the position of the sheepskin has been adjusted and the steel frame is flat-packed for easy delivery to any location. We call this version of the design the Swedish Butterfly Chair.

To produce the new Butterfly Chair Lars Kjerstadius created the company Cuero ('Leather' in Spanish). Today the company is still family owned and run by his son and daughter in-law. The Butterfly Chair is made deep in the Swedish forests with a clear focus on quality and sustainability. Machines are used to cut and bend the steel frame with precision, while the best sheepskin has been carefully selected.

The Butterfly Chair sheepskin comes from Iceland. Much of Iceland's lamb production is based on sustainably harvesting the bounties of nature. The chair is available in eight different sheepskins including natural grey. Only one in a hundred sheep are born with natural grey colour in Iceland and it is therefore priced slightly higher to reflect its rarity.

    Love the chair

The chair is quite large but doesn't look like it due to its design. The Icelandic sheep skin is very soft. I love my new Zen chair.
