The Cite armchair is an early masterpiece designed by Jean Prouvé. Originally designed in 1930 to furnish the student residence halls at the Cité University in Nancy, France. With distinctive runners made of powder-coated sheet steel and broad leather arm support straps, Prouvé himself used this armchair in the living room of his house due to its generous dimensions and idiosyncratic design.

Constructed from a sturdy seat covered in Vitra's fabric or leather and a bent sheet steel frame with an adjustable headrest, the Cite armchair is both durable and timeless. Its low height and ergonomically designed deep angled seat with a cushioned headrest ensures maximum comfort while seated.
Thanks to an understated playful aesthetic, the Cite armchair is versatile and suited for use at home or in public spaces.

The Cite armchair is available with eight different base options and upholstery options in four different Vitra fabric groups - F40, F80, L40 and L50. If you would like to order an armchair in a fabric not listed on the page, see the product download section on this product page, or please feel free to contact us if you would like to see some fabric samples.

    Jean Prouvé

    This product is designed by
    Jean Prouvé

Jean Prouvé completed his training as a metal artisan before opening his own workshop in Nancy in 1924. In the following years he created numerous furniture designs, and in 1947 Prouvé established his own factory.

He left his mark on architectural history again in 1971, when he played a major role in selecting the design of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers for the Centre Pompidou as chairman of the competition jury. Prouvé's work encompasses a wide range of objects, from a letter opener to door and window fittings, lighting and furniture, façade elements and prefabricated houses / modular building systems to large exhibition structures – essentially, almost anything that is suited to industrial production methods.
